Kaka move put on hold, admits AC Milan sporting director

first_imgAC Milan sporting director Ariedo Braida has admitted that the club have made little progress in their attempt to sign Real Madrid star Kaka, as they are struggling to come up with the funds to pay the player’s wages. The Rossoneri are desperate to lure the Brazil international back to Serie A ahead of the 2012-13 campaign, but their dire financial situation has complicated matters.“The Kaka situation is on stand-by. We’re waiting to see how the problem with his salary will be resolved,” Braida stated to Gazzetta dello Sport.“We would be really happy if Kaka came back, because he’s a guy who everyone likes. Kaka made a part of Milan’s history, and obviously we would be happy to have him with us again.”The official then went on to discuss the possible arrival of Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, and stressed that the San Siro side have not given up hope of signing the Montpellier defender just yet, despite an impasse over the player’s valuation.Paillade owner Louis Nicollin had earlier stated that that the Rossoneri must hand over the whole €42 million sum they received from Paris Saint-Germain for Thiago Silva if they want to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman, and also called Milan CEO Adriano Galliani ‘Kojak’. “At the moment, the negotiations for Yanga-Mbiwa have slowed down, but we’re still interested in the player,” Braida admitted.“The declarations from president Nicollin? We were not upset about it. It’s a part of the game.”Yanga-Mbiwa has a contract with the Ligue 1 champions until June 2013, but Milan are hopeful that an offer in the region of €7m will be enough to lure him away from his current club.last_img read more

McEnroe: Williams would be ranked ‘like 700’ on men’s tour

first_imgThis image released by Little, Brown and Company shows “But Seriously,” by John McEnroe. Life after his tour career is the focus of McEnroe’s new book in which he details the ups and downs of his many roles outside of tennis. (Little, Brown and Company via AP) LONDON (AP) — John McEnroe says Serena Williams would be “like 700” in the world tennis rankings if she played on the men’s tour. McEnroe, speaking to NPR about his memoir “But Seriously,” says Williams is the best female player ever, “no question.” But when asked about her being the best ever, without gender qualifiers, McEnroe was clear that he didn’t think so.McEnroe says “if she played the men’s circuit she’d be like 700 in the world.”The former tennis bad boy added that he thought Williams could beat some male players, “but if she had to just play the circuit — the men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story.”McEnroe won seven Grand Slam titles in his career. Williams has won 23.last_img read more

Signor Sammartino, addio—Remembering the life of Bruno Sammartino (April 25)

first_imgOn April 18, 2018, professional wrestling legend and icon Bruno Sammartino died at the tender age of 82. The reason that I say died at the “tender”age of 82 was because regardless of his physical age, Bruno Sammartino was one of the last wrestling “athletes” that competed in the innocent and golden age of professional wrestling. There was a point in time during the embryonic stage of professional wrestling when just getting local sponsorship for wrestling was like pulling teeth. Major League Baseball had television and radio locked down and the NFL was beginning to flex its muscles. The radio market share for professional wrestling was non-existent. Wrestling was a made-for-television enterprise only. Even professional boxing had a respectable piece of the radio market share “pie” that pro wrestling could never hope to get, both then and now.Bruno SammartinoBefore there was Chris Jericho, there was Bruno Sammartino. Before there was Big E, there was Haystacks Calhoun. Before Xavier Woods there was “Hurricane Hunt.” Also, we can’t forget our brothers from the east. Before there was Shinsuke Nakamura, there was the “Sheik.” Before there was Vince McMahon, there was “Chilly Billy” Cardille and wrestling promoter and manager, Rudy Miller. Before Miss Elizabeth was getting mad publicity and money in regards to hangin’ out with Randy “Macho Man” Savage, there was “Ringside Rosy” and “Pie” Traynor. “Rosy” going ballistic at ringside getting everyone hyped watching and attending “studio wrestling,” while the late great Pittsburgh Pirate “Pie” Traynor was selling the products and services of American Heating Company. “Pie” Traynor would always bark out this next phrase better than even the best carnival barker or town crier; “Who can? Amer-I-can; American Heating Company.”Bruno Sammartino was the perfect savior that professional wrestling not only wanted but needed. Born in Italy, Sammartino arrived in America at age 15 as a sickly young man with a questionable future…His was the perfect storyline for the budding American “distraction” known as pro wrestling. Sammartino and his father migrated to America in search of a better life.Little did he know what America had in store for him.He settled in Pittsburgh, where the lives of many Western Pennsylvanians that had migrated to “the industrial belt” of our country had become woven into the fabric of the waning industrialization of the region and the country. Sammartino was not destined to become just another “mill hunk.” He was ordained to become the most visible and marketable performer in an oftentimes scripted, synchronized and deceivingly brutal sport that was also facing an uncertain future. Sammartino reinvented himself even in the midst of the uncertainty of immigrating and settling in Western Pennsylvania just as the region was simultaneously shedding its industrial skin.Sammartino and Western PA evolved together. One could almost view them as “Siamese twins.” The country needed a “blue collar” hero to adore and look up to and Sammartino needed to be motivated to use his instinctive “protector” skills; this was a match made in heaven. It was said that Sammartino sold out Madison Square Garden more than any other performer in history. To pay their respects, the Garden tweeted a photo of their marquee which showed Sammartino in his prime. The text next to his picture read, “MSG remembers Garden legend Bruno Sammartino.”Bruno Sammartino was laid to rest on Monday morning, April 23, at a funeral mass held at Saint Sebastian Roman Catholic Church in Ross Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh. When I think back on the life of Bruno, a particular song by the late Johnny Cash comes to mind. “There ain’t no grave can hold my body down. There ain’t no grave can hold my body down. When I hear that trumpet sound I’m gonna rise right out of the ground. Ain’t no grave can hold my body down.”When that bell of competition rang, you could always count on Bruno Sammartino to answer. Furyk not ready to commit to taking Woods for Ryder Cup

first_imgTiger Woods of the US walks onto the 18th green during the final round for the 147th British Open Golf championships in Carnoustie, Scotland, Sunday, July 22, 2018. (AP Photo/Martin Cleaver) Woods moved from No. 31 to No. 20 in the Ryder Cup standings with two tournaments remaining before the top eight qualify for the Sept. 28-30 matches in Paris. Points are based on money, and the two events left for Woods — a World Golf Championship and PGA Championship — offer two of the largest purses.Woods already has been appointed an assistant captain, just as he was at Hazeltine two years ago. He has hinted at being a playing assistant. He has played just 12 events that offer Ryder Cup points, about half as many tournaments as most American prospects.Woods had the lead for three holes at Carnoustie until a double bogey at No. 11, and he wound up tied for sixth. It at least moved him to No. 50 in the world ranking, making him eligible for the $10 million Bridgestone Invitational next week at Firestone, where he has won eight times.Furyk looked at more than just Woods.Over the weekend at Carnoustie, no fewer than seven players had a chance to move into the top eight in the standings — Woods, Xander Schauffele, Kevin Kisner, Kevin Chappell, Tony Finau, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar.“We had a lot of guys in pretty good form,” Furyk said. “Flip over to Tiger, you look at him because he’s Tiger, and he’s earned a lot of attention. … I loved seeing him play well. I loved seeing him jump to 20th. It’s fun to watch. But we’ll handle him like everyone else.”Furyk was a vice captain under Davis Love III at Hazeltine in 2016 and was under consideration for one of the four captain’s picks. He was involved in frank discussions with the captain, and he sees this situation — if it comes down to that — unfolding the same way.Furyk said a big part of his decision on captain’s picks would be matching players with the course at Le Golf National, where the matches will be played. Furyk and a few Americans took a scouting trip on the weekend before the British Open. He said Finau played the course mainly with a 3-iron, and Justin Thomas hit only seven drivers over 72 holes during the French Open.“It’s a good second-shot golf course,” he said. CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk says it was fun to watch Tiger Woods contend at the British Open and briefly take the lead in the final round. Whether that means Woods is a lock for the U.S. team is still to be determined.center_img “I’m going to handle him the way I do everyone else,” Furyk said Monday before boarding a flight for the Canadian Open. “I’ll ask my top eight guys. The way he’s playing, he might be one of them. I’ll ask the vice captains, collectively, and I think we’ll do the best we can to round out the team. We want the guys playing the best.”last_img read more
