How Man United missed out on signing three England greats – LISTEN

first_imgFormer Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has revealed to talkSPORT how he was close to signing THREE England greats during his time at the club!Edwards spent 22 years in charge at Old Trafford and now holds the title of honorary life president, and he joined the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on Thursday to reflect on his tenure and discuss Jose Mourinho’s current crop of Red Devils stars. But he also had a surprise for hosts Alan Brazil and Micky Quinn, admitting the stars he’d missed out on during his long reign at United, including three legends of English football – Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. What an attack that would have made!Asked if there were any players he wished he signed during his Old Trafford tenue, Edwards told talkSPORT “There’s a few!“We nearly had Paul Gascoigne. We thought we got him, but in the end he went to Tottenham, and we also had the opportunity to get Gary Lineker before he went to Everton.“Alan Shearer was close. I’d done the deal with his agent and he told Alex [Ferguson] he wanted to come, but I think the problem there was Jack Walker.“Jack Walker [the owner of title rivals Blackburn Rovers] didn’t want Alan to come to United. He was happy for him to go to Newcastle, but for United it was almost ‘over my dead body’ for him.“Blackburn are only up the road, it’s a local derby and there’s no love lost between the supporters, so he didn’t come.”Listen to the full clip below! 1 Former #MUFC chairman Martin Edwards tells us the 3 players he missed out on signing while at the club.Imagine them in a Fergie side… 😱 pic.twitter.com/Dg1E3P75KK— The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast (@SportsBreakfast) September 28, 2017center_img Manchester United could have had an all-star attack under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s last_img read more
